Deirdre Gartland

Dr Deirdre Gartland is a Senior Researcher at Intergenerational Health Group at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute where she leads the Resilience and Mental Health program. In the CRE she co-leads the Priority 3 Resilience and Prevention working group. Her work is focused on understanding the impacts of family violence and how to support resilience in children, families and communities affected by trauma and violence. 

Deirdre is inspired by the energy and wisdom that comes from the CRE bringing together people with diverse skills, experiences, and backgrounds to work towards the common goal of reducing intergenerational trauma and violence in families, communities and social structures. 

She brings a passion for using research to expand our knowledge and understanding of the both the commonalities and diversity in peoples’ experiences, strengths and needs. 

Deirdre lives and works on Wurundjeri land. The natural world has always energised Deirdre, particularly the ocean. Spending time with her family, bush walking and reading keep her strong.
