Shadow Toke

Shadow is a community researcher working with the Karen community of refugee background. She completed her Honours within the CRE Strong Families Strong Babies study, focusing on what is trauma-and violence informed pregnancy care from the perspectives of Karen women, using a community-based participatory research methodology. For her PhD, Shadow is continuing her research on trauma informed and culturally safe maternity care for refugee background women.

She hopes the CRE stirs up a ripple effect of positive change at a level that impacts those who are normally missed in the system. Shadow brings understanding of and lived experiences as an interpreter in maternity space and as a Karen woman of refugee background. And a growing understanding of trauma informed care.

Shadow lives on Wadawurrung  and Bunurong Country and works on Wurundjeri Country. Spending quality time with those she love, especially her nephews and nieces keeps Shadow strong and resilient.
